There are many styles of martial arts throughout the world. Now each style of martial arts has a similar terminology, however this terminology usually revolves around the origins of that martial arts. For instance taekwondo originated in Korea and therefore the terminology used by those studying taekwondo is in Korean. With this being said those studying Korean are not expected to be fluent or anywhere near fluent after any amount of time. The terms that are taught to students are terms that specific to martial arts, such as kicks, stances, and how to address those above you. As a student progresses through the different level, they are expected to say different terms and begin using these words as part of natural vocabulary when in training. most of these terms are taught in class by the head instructor in preparation for tournament use and belt testing. A student will first learn how to count in Korean followed by a few kicks or stances. From it builds into the names and meanings of the forms that are practiced and the names given to each level above them.

History
Taekwondo originated in Korea in the 6th century AD when the country of Korea was divided into three kingdoms, which were the Koguryo, Parkche, and Shilla. since these kingdoms were divided, they were at constant war with each other. The Shilla kingdom was the smallest and contained the weakest military, which led to constant defeat and invasion. With this kingdom having constant trouble with the other two kingdoms the king of Shilla who was Chin Heung decided to create a group of warriors who specialized in sword and bow combat along with hand to hand combat. These warriors were called the Hwarang. These warriors were expected to follow a unique code of conduct that makes up the modern day code of conduct used in Taekwondo. This code of conduct included items such as never unjustly take the life of another, show honor among friends and family, etc. With their skills the Hwarang were able to defeat both opposing kingdoms and unify all of Korea under one Kingdom which was called Koryo. Now both Koryo and Hwarang are forms that are studied by those in taekwondo. This was the origins of taekwondo however the term taekwondo was not coined until 1955.
