My Name is Brandon Weatherspoon and I am a part of the martial arts community. The martial arts is a very large and unique community. Martial Arts can simply be defined as a method of using unarmed techniques to defend ones self from any number of attackers. Which was also the original purpose for its creation. In this community we teach students a large variety of skills that will help them to become better fighters and gain respect for all that is around them. Taekwondo Means way of the hand and foot, which is also thought of as a unarmed combat training.
Aside from learning to fight, each student is taught discipline. In fact without discipline, Martial arts is essentially useless. Respect for themselves and others is something that is taught worldwide in very style of martial arts and is something that is taught today.

One of the unique things that we do In this community is learn the language of the style of martial arts we are being taught. We aren't expected to be fluent, but we are expected to learn different commands and techniques in both Korean and Japanese. For example attention in Korean is Chariot which is said with authority. When an instructor issues commands to a lower rank, he is expected to obey that command immediately. This is all part of the respect. Respect is taught in a sense that we all have respect for one another unless a person is teaching. A teacher is given great amounts of respect and gratitude simply because they are teaching someone. Respect is a generational teaching meaning that that there is little if any difference between how students of today treat their instructors from the origin of martial arts.
There are professional sports that originated from martial arts. The UFC and other mixed martial arts fighting shows are what have changed the overall perception of martial arts. In the professional area fighters are high ranking martial artist who focus on training their bodies to overcome all physical and mental obstacles. These fights closely resemble a street fight that could occur in a real world scenario. Even though these fighters fight for glory they are very different from those that compete in tournaments hosted by the martial arts schools. |
The video above gives a small look into the techniques one in our community learns. It is a basic knife defense that is done accurately and realistically. the goal here is to not cause any harm to yourself during the time the attacker has the weapon. Along with that the defender must take the weapon away and the attacker be incapacitated in order for the attack to be over.
