The first goal that we have is that a student achieves a certain level of respect before reaching the rank of black belt. This rank is a rank that is applied for and is not given as easily as the others. A student can remain a candidate for years before his master instructor believes he is ready to test. The rank of black belt is an honor not an award as each person who achieves it comes to realize. As a student gains respect, he or she starts to change into a different person that is held to higher standard than that of others. He is expected to lead and set an example to all that he encounters. The second goal is self defense. This goal is obvious but cannot be achieved without respect. the two come together and are harder to achieve separately. Once a student is a black belt and becomes an instructor, he is considered an experienced fighter. this does not mean he can subdue any foe that he encounters, but in fact the opposite. He carries himself in a manner that is absent of pride and filled with a sense of selflessness in everything he does. Once a student becomes a black belt he has completed only half of his overall journey. That half is the student half. His days of constant instruction are over and he must now become a teacher that is directly under his teacher. He now has to begin his second half as an instructor of all that he has learned.
The levels of black belt take years to achieve and focus on fifty percent teaching and fifty present training. Martial Arts is best described as a circle, it never ends. There is always something new to learn and one can never learn all that there is to learn. It is not necessarily that there are more complex techniques to learn, but more so there are ways of teaching and applying martial arts into ones life that can still be hard to grasp. This is why when one becomes a black belt he or she is expected to teach and give off that knowledge to those that are below them. It is something that is a continuous process and can never fully be achieved. A black belt is expected to be proficient in all that they have achieved so far, in a sense there should be little to no errors. they are expected to be at the right hand of the instructors above them and help out in any way possible.
